What I can say after taking DHEA for a year
I have been waiting many months before writing this post. I wanted to be certain about the effects of taking DHEA on me. Now, I can share my experience with you.
I started taking DHEA a year ago after much consideration and a lot of research on the matter. But first, let's go through what DHEA is exactly and what it can do for you.
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a naturally occurring hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands, with smaller amounts made in the ovaries and brain. It acts as a precursor hormone, meaning the body can convert it into other important hormones—mainly estrogen and testosterone. Because of this role, DHEA is often considered part of the body’s broader hormone regulation system.
DHEA levels naturally peak in early adulthood and then gradually decline with age, often beginning in the late 20s or early 30s. By the time a woman reaches her mid-40s to 50s, DHEA levels can be significantly lower than they were earlier in life. This decline happens around the same time many women experience perimenopause and menopause, which has led to growing interest in DHEA supplementation.
What different researchers suggest DHEA may potentially support:
1. Energy and Mood Lower DHEA levels have been associated in some studies with fatigue and changes in mood. Supplementation may help some women feel more energetic or emotionally balanced, although results vary.
2. Libido and Sexual Health Since DHEA can convert into small amounts of testosterone and estrogen, it may help improve sexual desire or arousal in some women experiencing hormonal decline.
3. Bone Health Hormones play an important role in maintaining bone density. Some studies suggest DHEA may help support bone health, particularly in postmenopausal women, though it is not considered a primary treatment for osteoporosis.

5. Muscle and Body Composition Because of its role in hormone balance, DHEA may contribute to maintaining muscle mass and reducing age-related body composition changes, though effects are generally modest.
The effects of DHEA supplementation develop gradually over several months. I began with a 25mg dose for about four months before increasing it to 50mg. The first change I observed was a general boost in energy and recovery from my fairly intense training regimen.
Over the months, I've noticed some improvement in strength and muscle tone, which hadn't been the same in recent years. I had been struggling somewhat in my workout sessions, unable to lift as before, and this has changed, helping me train and recover more effectively.
I must say I feel well, stronger, and more balanced now, and I intend to continue using DHEA as long as it makes me feel this way.
However, I must mention some side effects as well.
Before taking it, I experienced some facial acne, which I understand was due to the hormonal changes occurring at this stage of life. DHEA certainly made it slightly worse. Now I have acne on my back and occasionally a couple of small ones on my face. It doesn't bother me much, but it might affect you differently.
I also noticed a slightly increase in body hair, but not excessively.
These are side effects that occurred in my body and can vary greatly from woman to woman. I practice intense exercise five times a week, and I know this impacts the effects of DHEA. My body requires more than someone with a less intense exercise routine. A close friend of mine, who has a less physically demanding routine, didn't notice as much change as I did.
In summary, I am very pleased with the outcomes of DHEA, and it has been a well-balanced decision for me.
